MR Shot1 LC Video Digitiser Info Announcement/Update December 1991
------------------------------------------------------------------
by Robin & Sue Frost, Frost Software Consultancy (AppleLink HOL0350)
The MR Shot1/LC from Display Research Laboratory in Hong Kong is a high
performance video digitiser for the Mac LC, for both QuickTime movie recording
and "Still Image" DTP/Presentation use.
Frost Software Consultancy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands have teamed up with
DRL to provide bundled software support for the excellent MR Shot1.
MR Shot1/LC will display "live" motion video onscreen up to about 256 x 192, in
8-bit specially rendered colour or greyscale. Even half size video at about
350 x 250 is acceptable for many applications, such as video disk stills or
slow-moving video.
Grabbing is realtime, 25 or 30 fps for images of scale 3-4 or below. Scaling
factors of 1 to 8 are available.
It can grab 16-bit and 24-color images to memory, at up to full PAL/NTSC
resolution.
A totally unique feature of MR Shot1 is its specially rendered 8-bit
display/grab mode. There is innovative DRL-designed custom silicon on the board
which does special dithering in time and space so the result looks like 16-bit
video to the eye.
This makes MR Shot1 ideal for low-cost info kiosk, training, CNN watching and
other motion video display applications using an 8-bit display depth.
When grabbing still images it can grab up to full resolution PAL/NTSC, in
greyscale, 8-bit, 16-bit or 24-bit.
The card is shipping currently with FSC bundled software support for
• still image grabbing FKEY + application
• HyperCard/SuperCard motion video display and image grabbing XCMD
• a PICS recording application (prior to the QuickTime launch only).
• QuickTime support is being readied for the QT launch at MacWorld (see below).
The board has three inputs: one S-Video and the other two Composite, and works
with either NTSC or PAL, autosensing each video input so you can actually mix
n'match video standards (!). A World-Standard digitiser card.
QuickTime Update
----------------
FSC now have a prototyped QuickTime application which will record greyscale,
8-bit and, most importantly, 16-bit colour movies which are perfectly matched
to the Video compressor. This will be completed ready for the QuickTime launch.
Recording at 172 x 144 (scale 4) or smaller we are grabbing to DISK at around
10 frames per second. This is the same digitising speed as reported for a Mac
IIfx with Rasterops 364 @ 160 x 120 by MacWeek magazine ! FSC are very pleased
with the results, particularly as these were achieved using a standard 40MB LC
internal drive.
Grabbing to memory MR Shot1 can achieve real time rates.
Due to the excellent video quality (all video processing is digitial) the
movies compress very well with the roadpizza Video compressor achieving 4 - 5
to 1 even for these small images.
The combination of MR Shot1 and Adobe's Premiere QuickTime video editing
software is a great match - enabling a low-cost QuickTime movie making solution
based on the Mac LC.
Mok Siu-Cheung, CEO of Display Research Laboratory will also be attending the
Pacific Market Forum at MacWorld in January. DRL are the only manuafacturer of
Macintosh add-on products in the Far East.
Distribution enquiries are still be welcomed worldwide, please contact Mok
Siu-Cheung at DRL.
